Mexico's President Defends Sovereignty Amid Tariff Crisis

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, declared that the country is at a crucial moment following the announcement of a 25% tariff imposed by the United States on Mexican products. She emphasized the need to defend the sovereignty and independence of Mexico, and that if necessary, other trade partners will be sought while maintaining sovereignty and dignity.

Regarding the consequences of the tariffs, Sheinbaum admitted that in the short term they affect the United States more than Mexico. She highlighted the close interconnection of the economies of both countries through the USMCA and described Trump’s decision as unilateral and without reasonable justification.

On the immediate effects of the tariffs that have come into force, the president noted that the peso was affected, reaching 21 pesos per dollar, but remained more stable than in other critical moments, such as Trump’s first term, the previous administration, and the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Regarding social programs, Sheinbaum assured that they are protected and that beneficiaries should not fear potential impacts, as the government is prepared to face the burdens. She also confirmed that despite Trump’s decisions, the Mexican government will inform about the tariffs and the country's response at an event in the Zócalo this Sunday.

The president reiterated that Mexico will not submit and that the economy is stable. If the tariffs persist, the country will seek to make important decisions for its future, including the possibility of seeking new trade partners like Canada. Sheinbaum expects a call with President Trump to negotiate the suspension of the tariffs and to design a commercial response plan if necessary.
